Although several sources of ROS may be involved, a family of the NADPH oxidases appears to be especially important for redox signaling; during sepsis, a major source of ROS is the NADPH oxidases that are present in a variety of cells, especially the professional phagocytes and endothelial cells, and that are central to the genesis of the inflammatory response [34] (Figure 1).
