Given the well-described association between hypomethylation and increased gene expression, this would be consistent with studies reporting DNA hypomethylation near IFN-1-associated genes in CD4+ T cells from patients with SLE.22 Conceivably, increased IFN-1 module expression in T cells may also reduce the threshold for their activation, facilitating loss of tolerance and providing another mechanism by which elevated IFN-1 contributes to the development of autoimmunity in SLE. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is Autoimmunity.
