It has been suggested that elevated level of TIMP-3 in eyes in AMD results in thickening of Bruch’s membrane (BM; Kamei and Hollyfield, 1999), and recent study on human RPE has shown that TIMP-3 is one of the strongest candidate gene in AMD pathophysiology (Strunnikova et al., 2010). Here, TIMP3 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
