Importantly, one of the shared candidate genes under selection between East Asian dog breeds and either modern European breeds or FBDs, the MKKS/BBS6 gene, is associated in humans with McKusick–Kaufman syndrome (MKKS) and Bardet–Biedl syndrome (BBS; Slavotinek et al. 2002). This evidence concerns the gene MKKS and Bardet-Biedl syndrome.
