In HCC, the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) upregulates the expression of DNA methyltransferase 1 that results in the hypermethylation and epigenetic repression of potential tumour suppressor genes, including PANX2. Recently, Le Vasseur et al. demonstrated that Panx2 expression is not limited to the central nervous system as was originally proposed, and it was shown to be expressed in liver among many other organs and tissues [20]. This evidence concerns the gene HGF and neoplasm.
