To identify a non-antiviral VIP for in-depth investigation we first excluded all VIPs with a well-known antiviral activity (Supplementary file 6; here as in the rest of the manuscript antiviral means a protein activity that restricts viral infection) and then selected all remaining VIPs with strong overall evidence of adaptation (Supplementary file 1I) and at least 10 branches with signals of adaptation. The gene discussed is VIP; the disease is viral infectious disease.
