Recently, it was found that a subset of PfEMP1 with specific domains termed DC8 and DC13, encoded by upsA var genes, bind to endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) within the brain, which could be a major factor in the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria (Sampath et al., 2015, Turner et al., 2013).
