Xiong et al. (2014) reported that AuNPs prevented cisplatin-induced acquired chemoresistance and stemness in ovarian cancer cells and sensitized them to cisplatin. They demonstrated that 20 nm AuNPs inhibited proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastases in a preclinical mouse model of ovarian cancer. Mechanistically, AuNPs prevent cisplatin-induced activation of Akt and NF-κB signaling axis in ovarian cancer cells that are critical for EMT, stem cell maintenance, and drug resistance (Xiong et al., 2014). This evidence concerns the gene AKT1 and ovarian carcinoma.
