These observations are inaccordance with recent studies in AD patients showing beneficial effects ofexercise on their physical performance and mobility.36 As a further indicator for the effectiveness of ourparadigm, increased expression levels of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) were measured, which has been previously described to be inducedfollowing voluntary exercise in rodents,37,38 as well as in ADpatients.39 The gene discussed is BDNF; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
