The miR-34 family, which consists of three isoforms (miR-34a, miR-34b, and miR-34c) encoded by two p53 direct transcriptional target genes (mir-34a and mir-34b/c), is considered to be partly responsible for carrying out p53’s tumor suppressive function by targeting the 3′ UTRs of genes that are critical to the cell cycle and survival, such as BCL2, cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), and MYCN19, 22.
