The sex-dependent effect of SIRT polymorphisms on atherosclerosis was also observed in a study of 1356 stroke-free North Americans, where male carriers of the SIRT3 rs12363280 G and rs4980329 T alleles had higher grey scale median (GSM), an indicator of plaque morphology and predictor of stroke, while women homozygous for SIRT3 rs3825075 T allele had lower cIMT [99,100]. The gene discussed is SIRT3; the disease is atherosclerosis.
