MUC2 and amebic dysentery: EhCP5 is emerging as a multifunctional enzyme that plays critical roles in the pathogenesis of intestinal amebiasis by first cleaving the C-terminus of MUC2 to dissolve the mucus layer and second, to bind αvβ3 integrins receptors on goblet cells to trigger mucus hypersecretion and pro-inflammatory responses.
