Reduced expression of DNA (cytosine-5)-methyltransferase (DNMT)s and global DNA hypomethylation are observed in both human and murine lupus CD4+ T cells, which are associated with increased expression of autoimmune associated genes such as CD40 ligand (CD40L) and TNFSF7 (CD70) in lupus T cells [8–10]. This evidence concerns the gene DNMT1 and systemic lupus erythematosus.
