These data opened the possibility that, besides a presynaptic impact, reductions of SNAP-25 levels may affect the structure, and/or the function of the postsynaptic compartment, which would provide a logical frame for the protein involvement in psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia or intellectual disability, which are known to be also characterized by defects at the postsynaptic compartment (Fernández et al., 2009; Penzes et al., 2011). Here, SNAP25 is linked to schizophrenia.
