The main side effects of long-term therapy were newly developed diabetes (diuretics > calcium blockers > ACE inhibitors), and a significantly greater occurrence of cough and angioedema with ACE inhibitors, 72 per 10,000 (0.72 %), vs diuretics (0.04 %), and calcium blockers (0.06 %) for African ethnicity patients in ALLHAT [17, 86]. This evidence concerns the gene ACE and diabetes mellitus.
