From the side of the host, several biomarkers [PCT, CRP, ICAM, ANG2, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IFN-gamma-inducible protein 10 (IP-10)] have demonstrated a consistent statistical association with mortality in patients with severe or cerebral malaria in two or more studies [83, 85, 87]. This evidence concerns the gene ANGPT2 and cerebral malaria.
