Conventional IBD therapies include COX-2 inhibitors (aminosalicylates and their derivatives), corticosteroids, immunomodulatory drugs, antibiotics, and biologic drugs such as the monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), a pivotal pro-inflammatory cytokine able to start and maintain the inflammatory process in the gut.
