NUCB2 and diabetes mellitus: Nucleobindin, an EF-hand calcium-binding protein, is a Golgi-resident protein that plays a key role in calcium homeostasis in the Golgi network.14 Nucleobindin is also present in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.15 Muscles and adipose tissue of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus show increased expression of Nesf/NUCB2.16 I.v. injection of nesfatin-1 significantly reduces blood glucose in hyperglycemic db/db mice in a time-, dose- and insulin-dependent manner.17 This suggests that Nesf/NUCB2 regulates intracellular glucose metabolism in the peripheral tissues.
