Given the role of HJURP in the development of HCC, together with the functional relevance of rs3771333 in modulation of HJURP expression, one might expect that individuals who carry the at-risk rs3771333 C allele, and thus have decreased HJURP mRNA and protein levels and subsequently lower capacity to maintain genomic stability and proper chromosome segregation during mitosis, may be at a higher susceptibility to developing HCC. This evidence concerns the gene HJURP and hepatocellular carcinoma.
