Thus, mutation of a single base (G549A) of the HREM of GAS5 lncRNA diminishes steroid receptor binding and ablates apoptosis induction in breast cancer cells [22], and an identical mutation of the GAS5 HREM oligonucleotide also prevents its induction of apoptosis in MCF7 cells (Figure 4), indicating that the mechanism of induction of apoptosis in breast cancer cells by the HREM is the same as that of GAS5 lncRNA.
