There are at least three strands of evidence for an association between oxidative stress and complement activation in the pathogenesis of AMD (1) phagocytosized oxidized POS material can disturb the synthesis and the secretion of CFH in RPE cells, (2) the inability of the H402Y variant to generate anti-inflammatory iC3b components on MDA-loaded surfaces, (3) the finding that oxidative stress can regulate the expression of CFH and CFB [116–119]. This evidence concerns the gene CFB and age-related macular degeneration.
