Taken as a whole, the profile we observe in vaginal swabs of pregnant women with BV but without APO may consist in an adapted anti-inflammatory (5-fold IL-10 increase), strong mucosal homeostatic (40-fold IL-22 increase) response to BV-induced inflammation (28-fold IL-8 increase, with neutrophil recruitment limited by the concomitant anti-inflammatory response). The gene discussed is IL22; the disease is bacterial vaginosis.
