FGF2 and neoplasm: Heparanase (HPSE) is an endo-beta-glucuronidase that is capable of cleaving heparan sulfate (HS) side chains of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) on cell surfaces and extracellular matrices (ECM) of basement membrane (BM) and plays critical roles in tumor cell invasion, migration, and angiogenesis by remodeling ECM and delivering some cytokines such as basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) [8–10].
