All these findings put together; it is tempting to hypothesize that a deficient DNA repair system (impaired XRCC1, for instance) could enhance apoptosis of the central nervous system (primarily the brain, evidenced by the reduced XRCC mRNA expression, as demonstrated in rats and baboons), leading to neuropsychological disorders, including schizophrenia. Here, XRCC1 is linked to schizophrenia.
