Remarkably, we found recently that HA within the capsule of Group A streptococci, the pathogens responsible for tonsillitis and necrotizing fasciitis, can bind efficiently to LYVE-1 in lymphatic endothelium and that the receptor mediates not only adhesion of these microbes to lymphatic vessels but also lymphatic dissemination in a mouse model of streptococcal soft tissue infection (37). The gene discussed is LYVE1; the disease is tonsillitis.
