Based on the results of this and other studies, the following alternative hypothesis is proposed to explain the molecular mechanism involved in the crucial transition of cancer cells from androgen-dependent to an androgen-independent state: When the cancer cells are deprived of androgen supply, most of them die due to starvation, but some of them may have survived under the heavy selection pressure by switching their reliance on sugar (or glucose) uptake (regulated by androgen) [42] to fatty acid uptake (transported by FABP5) as an alternative energy source (so-called CRPCs).
