Stable, ambulatory, asymptomatic patients, with a large majority being on HAART (88.86%) with stable immune function (as evidenced by only 9.75% patients having CD4 count <200 cell/mm3 at the time of recruitment into this study and hormonal assessment) may explain the low occurrence of sick euthyroid syndrome in our study cohort. This evidence concerns the gene CD4 and euthyroid sick syndrome.
