We examined the over-representation of differentially expressed genes in Fmr1KO cultures and brain tissues for three gene sets associated with cognitive development defects: (1) Mouse Gene Informatics (MGI) genes associated with behavioral/neurological phenotypes [22]; (2) human autism candidate genes from Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) [23]; and (3) FMRP binding targets [24] (Additional file 8: Table S8). The gene discussed is FMR1; the disease is autism.
