LCMV GP33 peptide-specific CD8+ T-cells can induce lesions in cultured murine neurons presenting GP33 in MHC class I. While this report relies on peptide pulsing and artificial upregulation of MHC class I, viral infection-induced upregulation of class I has been demonstrated in Borna disease virus-infected rat neuronal cultures, which could be targeted by antiviral CD8+ T-cells, eventually leading to apoptosis of neurons (23). Here, CD8A is linked to viral infectious disease.
