In the db/db model of obesity and type 2 diabetes the AMPK and Sirtuin 1 activator resveratrol, found in red wine, prevented lipid accumulation and the development of CKD, implicating both molecules as well as downstream effectors such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α), PPARα–oestrogen-related receptor (ERR)-1, and α–sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) [43].
