In 2008, it was demonstrated that three variants of rs2283228, rs2237895, and rs2237895 within KCNQ1 were strongly associated with an increased risk of T2DM in East Asian and European populations [11], and rs2237892 was associated with type 2 diabetes in two independent Japanese populations, as well as Korean, Chinese, and European ancestry [20]. This evidence concerns the gene KCNQ1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
