Although the edited WSSV-miR-N12 bound Ago just like the unedited WSSV-miR-N12, the edited WSSV-miR-N12-coupled Ago could not interact with the target gene wsv399. As a result, WSSV-miR-N12 editing at the early stage of virus infection promoted the expression of viral wsv399 gene, leading to the inhibition of WSSV replication and subsequently affecting virus latency.
