However, when mice were subjected to the mild stroke model (30 min MCAO and 72 h reperfusion), a significant reduction of both direct and indirect infarct volumes was observed in metallothionein-II treated mice (n = 9) when compared to vehicle-treated control mice (n = 8): direct infarct volume in the MT-II-treated group was 33 ± 4mm3, 51 ± 6mm3 in the vehicle-treated group (p = 0.02) (Fig 3A), and indirect infarct volume was 26 ± 3.5 mm3 (MT-II group), respectively 34 ± 3mm3(vehicle group) (p = 0.046) (data not shown).
