Immunostaining of patient-derived perihilar cholangiocarcinoma biopsies demonstrated extensive neovascularization in desmoplastic tissue and heterogeneous glucose transporter 1 (GLUT-1) overexpression, hinting towards the possible involvement of hypoxia- and HIF-1-mediated angiogenesis. The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is hilar cholangiocarcinoma.
