ARAFP2 and infection: We identified 12 proteins harboring the PKS domain in A. rabiei and two of their corresponding transcripts were up-regulated during infection, including pks2, but not pks1. In agreement with that, pks1 was shown to be involved in 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-melanin pigment biosynthesis in A. rabiei and not needed for pathogenicity, while the pks2 is in the same clade as pksCT which is responsible for biosynthesis of the nephrotoxic mycotoxin citrinin in M. purpureus (Akamatsu et al., 2010).
