Indeed, treatment of Giardia-infected mice with CCK increased muscle contraction in a ketotifen-dependent fashion (a mucosal mast cell secretory antagonist); depletion of mast cell granule contents with compound 48/80 prior to CCK treatment also completely blocked the CCK-induced muscle contraction suggesting a role for mast cells in CCK modified levels during giardiasis(Li et al., 2007).
