Studies performed in atherosclerosis have shown that CD163 is expressed by anti-inflammatory M2-macrophages instead of pro-inflammatory M1-macrophages and its expression is increased at inflammatory sites, specially in plaques at sites of hemorrhage5, 6 or in asymptomatic plaques7 while healthy aortas do not contain or contain few CD163 (+) cells8, 9. The gene discussed is CD163; the disease is atherosclerosis.
