More than 100 of these genes overlap with a DNA methylation study of peripheral blood from schizophrenia patients.6 Important DNA methylation changes have been reported in the early stages of development and suggest that aberrant DNA methylation during development could be critical for the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.7 We found that probes in the regions of DNMT1, NOS1 and SOX10 were differentially methylated in schizophrenia4 and it is known these genes are also differentially methylated from foetal to neonatal life stage.7 Here, NOS1 is linked to schizophrenia.
