ATF6α is one of the transmembrane proteins needed to induce response to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress caused by hypoglycemia, hypoxia, or accumulation of unfolded proteins during protein synthesis.21 Actually, ER stress is critical for pancreatic cells dysfunction and death.22,23 ATF6 has 2 isoforms—α and β, and it has been described that double ATF6α and ATF6β- knockout mice die in the embryonary period,24,25 which indicates that the presence of at least 1 isoform is essential for survival. The gene discussed is ATF6; the disease is Hypoglycemia.
