Regarding oncogenic mechanisms, the presence of the translocation t(14; 18) (leading to overexpression of Bcl-2, an antiapoptotic gene promoting B-cell survival) has been detected in 5 of 7 salivary gland biopsies of patients with Sjögren's syndrome who developed lymphoma and in none of the 50 corresponding biopsies of patients with the syndrome not associated with lymphoma [112]. The gene discussed is BCL2; the disease is lymphoma.
