Tauopathies can be sporadic or familiar, genetically determined by mutations in MAPT. As a MAP, the role of tau is to promote microtubule (MT) assembly and stabilization and regulate MT dynamics (Goode and Feinstein, 1994; Gustke et al., 1994; Trinczek et al., 1995).
