One surprising result from our analysis was that the extended promoter region of BRCA1 did not show significant hypermethylation in breast cancer relative to adjacent tissue or control mammoplasty tissue despite the fact that we chose a promoter region for analysis similar to or overlapping those employed in other studies, many of which did find BRCA1 hypermethylation in breast cancer [28, 31, 61–64].
