A case-control study from Japan has shown that the number of individuals carrying ALDH2∗2 allele is significantly higher in the patients with late-onset AD (LOAD) than in the controls (48.1% versus 37.4%, p = 0.001) [5]. ALDH2∗2 genotype interacts synergistically with the presence of the apolipoprotein E allele 4 (APOE-ε4), which is a widely accepted risk factor for LOAD [5]. This evidence concerns the gene APOE and Alzheimer disease.
