Importantly, statins may reduce fibrosis by lowering the profibrogenic cytokine transforming growth factor-β1 [26], and cell proliferation, collagen deposition, angiogenesis and fibroblast differentiation into the profibrogenic myofibroblast phenotype which characterise idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, are all mediated through connective tissue growth factor induced by the cytokine transforming growth factor-β1. This evidence concerns the gene CCN2 and pulmonary fibrosis.
