We have previously shown that in utero Cre-mediated recombination of Hif-1α in cells expressing surfactant protein C (Sp-c) led to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in mice, with impaired surfactant production, excess glycogen storage in parenchymal epithelial cells, and impaired cellular differentiation [30]. The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is newborn respiratory distress syndrome.
