We hypothesized that the tumor suppressor BARD1, with functions in DNA repair pathways, plays a role in the pathogenesis of lung fibrosis, as previous reports suggested a role of BARD1 in the regulation of proliferation: i) BARD1 expression is upregulated in proliferating cells, ii) BARD1 isoforms are highly upregulated in cancer cells, and associated with uncontrolled or deregulated growth. Here, BARD1 is linked to cancer.
