These alterations, which affect a series of crucial cellular mechanisms such as cell proliferation, differentiation, senescence, and apoptosis, are also present in IPF, where a lower expression of two subunits of telomerase (h-TERT and h-TERC) and a subsequent shortening of telomeres have also been described [14–17]. Here, TERC is linked to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
