The use of cytokines such as IL-6 and type I IFN signatures has been studied prospectively by Reed et al. who determined that type 1 IFN peripheral blood gene “scores,” chemokine signatures as well as levels of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF may serve as sensitive and responsive longitudinal biomarkers of change in disease activity in juvenile and adult DM [2].
