PGP and tuberculosis: While sub-inhibitory concentrations of clarithromycin may induce phenotypic macrolide resistance, clarithromycin may offer additional benefits including its anti-inflammatory properties and positive influence on pharmacokinetics of orally co-administered antibiotics, including linezolid for which serum exposure in MDR TB patients increases with clarithromycin43, likely through increased oral bioavailability due to inhibition of P-gp mediated efflux.
