G6PD and G6PD deficiency: HEV is endemic in southern Asia, which is home to a significant proportion of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient individuals and instances of co-existence of both the conditions should not be rare; however, only seven case reports [31, 87–92] and three small case series [93–95], with a total of 17 cases, have been published of severe hemolysis occurring in patients with acute hepatitis E associated with G6PD deficiency (Table 5).
